Telemarketing Company – Are They Legitimate?
As scams have become more complex, it’s no wonder that some
telemarketing companies come under fire as consumers try to weed the
legitimate calls from attempted scams. Finding out whether the company
is legitimate is usually fairly simple using.
Ask if you can return a call to their bank of phones. While this is
sometimes actually not possible, a person posing as a telemarketer
might simply hang up on you without attempting to answer the request.
Some phone banks are set up for outgoing phone calls only and you won’t
be able to call back, but the telemarketer should be able to put you in
contact with someone from the company they are claiming to represent.
The art of scams has been around long before telemarketing programs.
Consider, for example, the familiar story of a Bible salesman,
traveling across the country during the early to middle part of the
1900s. The salesman would find an obituary listed in a local newspaper,
then would take a Bible to the door of the remaining spouse and
introduce himself (probably using a fictitious name). The salesman
would announce that he had taken an order for a Bible and was here to
deliver it. When the person at the door said they had no idea what he
was talking about, he’d innocently ask to see the deceased person,
acting surprised when informed that the person had recently died. The
salesman would apologize profusely and stand, looking at the Bible for
a moment. Then he’d say that since that person had put a modest deposit
down, he’d be happy to let some remaining family member have the Bible
for the amount owed. Grief would tempt most to pay the “balance,” even
though it was more than the Bible was worth, because the deceased had
ordered it.
While it would have been difficult to verify the truth of that
salesman’s story, verifying that a telemarketing company and the
organization it claims to represent is just a matter of asking the
right questions and following up on the information.
